New use for emergency underwear.

I'm amazed that one can sneeze 10 times in a row while turning onto route 44...crossing four lanes of traffic...during morning rush hour... and not wreck.  I did this seemingly impossible task this morning. Actually, I'm good at it. It happens every morning.
Then I frantically grope for a tissue or anything that I can blow my nose on while cruising down route 44.
I blew my nose today on my emergency underwear that I keep in the console. While this brought great pleasure to my children, I was frustrated that ..... # 1- I'm in this situation every morning... #2- It is embarrassing to blow my nose on underwear....#3- I can't remember to put Kleenex in my car and # 4- My emergency underwear will need to be replaced... again.
I'm suffering from seasonal allergies .
My eyes itch so bad that I can't put my make-up on until I get to work. This is after taking a Zyrtec ( anti- histamine) and putting antihistamine eye drops in my eyes.
As an adult suffering from seasonal allergies, I take precautions ( except for remembering to bring Kleenex into the car).
I take an antihistamine everyday. I put antihistamine eye drops in my eyes. I have an asthma inhaler with me at all times should I encounter a severe allergen . I take a medicine called Singulair that works with the antihistamine to reduce symptoms. I have dust mite covers on my bed and pillows. I have a "pretend" down comforter .
Still, I have allergic symptoms. The dark circles and bags under my eyes are causing me to look like Al Pacino.
Worst of all, two out of four of my daughters suffer from seasonal allergies. All four have food allergies.
This makes for a less than lovely experience when we go out to dinner and are seated outside. By the time the server takes our order, with all the food allergy stipulations and the sneezing , wheezing,  mucus and eye rubbing he is ready to stab us in the eyeball with an Epi-pen.
Seasonal allergies, indoor allergies and food allergies are a chronic condition that should be identified and managed!!
Many parents come in with infants and ask if their child could be allergic to the family pet or the Ragweed or the Oak trees.. The answer is NO!! Most kids under the age of twelve months don't have any seasonal allergies. Very few have pet allergies. If anything, they have food allergies and or indoor allergies like dust mite or cockroach.
As kids get older they can develop seasonal allergies, indoor allergies , food allergies and pet allergies.
This can be baffling to parents because toddlers in daycare and school aged children seem to always have runny or stuffy noses and lots of mucus and watery and itchy eyes.
Are these consecutive "colds" or are these allergies? Or, does the child have both?
Children in daycare and school can get up to two " colds" per month on average. Each of which can last up to 2 weeks. This means that all month the child has cold symptoms.
Allergies, seasonal and pet and indoor, make the likelihood that the child will not only experience the symptoms of allergies, but also will be more likely to get viral and/ or bacterial illnesses.
Why?
When kids get abrasions ( aka booboos) of the skin, the booboo is watched carefully for signs of infection. This is because it is a break in the covering of our body.
When kids have pet, seasonal and/ or indoor allergies, the inside of their noses ( which is kind of the same as skin) gets booboos. This is due to the constant rubbing and blowing of the nose. This opens up a way for viruses and bacteria to get inside the body.
If the eyes are involved it is even worse. The child's hands,  that are contaminated with germs , constantly rub the eyes which is a direct entry into the body.
Children with these allergies get a characteristic line around the top of their nose( allergic salute) from rubbing it and get bags and lines( Dennie's lines) under their eyes.
Some seasonal allergies, pet allergies and indoor allergies can cause respiratory problems and make kids wheeze.
If your child has allergies there are things that can be done to eliminate the symptoms!!
The key is to identify the allergens ( specific things causing the allergic symptoms) and treat the symptoms!!!
Get your child allergy tested!
It is quick and painless! No needles! Just a plastic set of tiny prongs that barely scrape the skin.
The information can help your pediatrician find ways to eliminate the allergic symptoms!!
I just went through allergy testing and figured out that I'm allergic to palm trees.
I'm surrounded by these trees!!
My doctor gave me an amazing antihistamine and added singular and a nose spray. She says to give it a few weeks and I should be free of symptoms.

  • Until then I'll just pray for no traffic on route 44, put on my make up at work , rock the Al Pacino look and bring more emergency underwear.
